Types of Gardens
Kitchen Garden
The Kitchen Garden contains items you are going to harvest from and cook with regularly. These items will fall into the categories of leaves, roots, & fruits.
Native Plant Garden
Also known as pollinator spaces, Native Plant Gardens are comprised of plants adapted to the Midwest ecosystem, which form a beneficial relationship with wildlife.
Reasons YOU should have a Native Plant garden
Native plant gardens are incredibly beneficial to the local ecosystem in a myriad of ways. Being native to the region, these plants thrive without the need for excessive fertilizers and pesticides, unlike non-native counterparts. Furthermore, they are more resilient to local weather conditions, requiring less water and aiding in the prevention of soil erosion. By filtering the air and attracting beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies, native plant gardens contribute to a healthier environment. These gardens also serve as a haven for various wildlife species, showcasing the beauty and significance of our local heritage. Consider embracing a native plant garden not only for its practical benefits but also for the aesthetic appeal it brings to your surroundings.
Smaller types of Kitchen Gardens
Herb
Salad
Consider starting with herb and salad gardens if you feel like a big kitchen garden isn’t in the cards for you right now. You can easily grow a variety of fresh herbs like basil, mint, and cilantro in small containers on your patio or balcony. Additionally, planting a mix of lettuce, spinach, and arugula in a raised bed can provide you with a steady supply of nutritious greens for your salads. These compact gardens not only add beauty to your space but also allow you to enjoy the satisfaction of harvesting your own ingredients for meals.
Types of Beds
Raised Cedar
Steel
